St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the patron saint of ecology, indigenous people, and care for God's creation. Katari would often go into the woods alone to speak to God and listen to Him in her heart and in the voice of nature. Her birth parents both died when she was young, then she was rejected and treated badly by her village for her Catholic faith and belief in God which was taught to her by her mother. Her village would call her names, throw sones at her and not feed her on Sundays when she spent the day praying instead of working.
Katari ended up walking hundreds of miles to live with a Christian community where she spent the few remaining years of her life completely devoted to God.
Katari would often create wooden crosses out of tree branches and she is known as "The Lily of the Mohawks"
